2019 Conference on Chinese Language Education in the South Pacific Were Successfully Held in Fiji

On August 17th 2019, a beautiful and melodious day, 2019 Conference on Chinese Language Education in the South Pacific was successfully opened at Laucala Campus , the University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji. The conference was co-hosted by the University of the South Pacific and the Consortium of the Advanced Subjects in New Zealand, organized by New Zealand Pinnacle Education Group, and it received special support from Jinan University, China Higher Education Press and the US Cheng & Tsui Publishing.

The opening ceremony of the conference kicked off with a welcome ceremony vibrant with native dances and songs full of Fiji flavors. The chairman of the organizing committee of the conference Dr. Mathew, Associate Dean of the School of Arts, Law and Education at the University of the South Pacific first gave a welcome speech then followed to express her joy that the USP can pass such a high-level academic conference to the Fiji region and the South Pacific and was excited to support the contribution of the development of Chinese language education. Later, the keynote speakers of the conference also gave brief introductions to the Chinese education in Singapore, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, and fully affirmed the positive significance of the conference for the academic promotion of Chinese education in the South Pacific. Mr. Paul Spoonley, former Vice-Chancellor and Distinguished Professor of Massey University, also sent a video greeting.

The main theme of the conference is “Chinese Language Education in the Age of Globalization and Diversi”, with representatives from world-renowned universities such as Cambridge University, University of California, Los Angeles, Nanyang Technological University, University of Sydney, and the University of Auckland. Professors in the field of language education in colleges and universities served as the keynote speakers of the conference. The conference also organized a round-table discussion on the theme of “The Development and Construction of Chinese Educational Organization a global Context” which invited the directors of Confucius Institutes from Queensland University of Technology, the University of Adelaide, the University of the South PacificThe Confucius Institute at the University, the Confucius Institute at Fiji University of the Pacific, at Marymount International School in London, UK which conducted professional-intensive academic discussions on this topic from different perspectives. All attendees come from 8 countries and regions,16 universities in the world.

The conference consisted of five professors' keynote reports and five panel discussions on different topics, covering many aspects of Chinese language education, such as Chinese learning and teaching in the context of globalization, and the characteristics of Chinese teaching in Australia and Fiji. The professors also dived into Chinese language teaching in international schools, the characteristics of teaching Chinese as a second language, Chinese language classroom and Chinese language testing, Chinese language phenomena, Chinese culture and Chinese language teaching in general. The vibrant discussion topics attracted many teachers, scholars and experts from the Chinese language education field in the South Pacific and China. The participants conducted in-depth and intensive collaborations on these topics, which fully promoted scholars, teachers and students in the field of Chinese education. There were countless invaluable moments of academic and cultural exchanges between attendees, speakers, sponsors and other parties.

This conference is the second academic event of the "Chinese Language Education" theme held in Fiji after the 2018 Summit Chinese Language Education South Pacific, which was held in Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand. With the globalization background as the general direction and the Chinese language education in the South Pacific as the focus, the conference launched a variety of topics and was actively recognized by all participants. The conference not only further strengthened the academic and theoretical development of Chinese language education in the South Pacific, but also brought Chinese language education in the South Pacific region to the vision of global universities for the first time. The conference promoted the cooperation and development of Chinese education in the South Pacific and paved a sustainable pathway for the future of Chinese Language Education globally.
